Besigye, Byanyima Angered by Katikkiro Mayiga's Election Comments |
Recent comments by the Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga in which he called for opposition leaders to accept the outcomes of last February's general elections have infuriated opposition FDC's presidential candidate, Col Dr Kizza Besigye.
Katikkiro Mayiga while addressing the Kingdom Parliament on Monday, stressed that while some people were unhappy with the election results, they all ought to use the legally provided ways to demonstrate their dissatisfaction.
The Premier added, "We have also heard what came out of the Supreme Court. The right way should always be to seek the lawful ways of challenging what we disagree with."
"As Ugandans we must acquaint ourselves with seeking legal redress to resolve what hurts us. Sometimes courts don't give is what we want, sometimes we see loopholes in the system, but this should always be our only option because a lawless country is never stable."
Mr Mayiga's remarks however, tickled Dr Besigye who rushed to social media and questioned whether or not Buganda Kingdom was now supporting the NRM regime and its treatment of opposition.
"Buganda supports Mr Museveni's imprisoning his opponent and hundreds of agents and raiding FDC offices to be declared winner?," queried Besigye; adding "Ssebo Owekitiibwa, would you support "laws" used to abolish Buganda Kingdom in 1967? Unjust laws?
Besigye's wife Winnie Byanyima also jumped in to criticize the Prime Minister, demanding that he takes back his statements. Tell Katikkiro to redeem himself and retract his comments on sham elections rejected internally and denounced world over," she tweeted.
In a social media exchange that ensued, Katikkiro Mayiga was supported by the government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo and Uganda Joint Christian Council's Pastor Joseph Serwadda, who reminded Besigye that a number of other contentious issues in the county have been resolved peacefully.
"In 1991 this government enacted an NGO law that despised our (Pentecostal) religion. Paul Kawanga Semwogerere and Dr Kizza Besigye at that time were ministers. We contested this law peacefully and it was shot down"
Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo on the other hand blasted Besigye, describing his election claims as 'hot air.'
"It's not enough to claim you were cheated without you providing the evidence. It remains hot air," he said.
