{UAH} Besigye detained in Moroto
Folks;
I have two adversarial questions about this Besigye - Museveni war of attrition:
1. What does Museveni gain by continuously persecuting Dr. Besigye?
It seems tome that Besigye's mere existence annoys the president. So he places Besigye under house arrest, with a standing arrest warrant for him - I think every police officer in Kampala carries a warrant for Besigye, should he sneak out of his house.
2. But, I also have to ask: What does Besigye hope to gain here by continually promoting these confrontations with the police?
On a personal level, Besigye is a brave man, as he's withstood unspeakable brutality. He doesn't need to get any one more whipping to prove his valor.
However, Besigye owes it to his millions of supporters to limit the likelihood of any of them getting hurt for his cause.
The swearing-in-ceremony is another Museveni coronation; however, it's also a national event that has attracted a large number of respected foreign leaders. These leaders come as state guests, not Museveni's visitors. Therefore, they deserve to be shielded from the endless street fights between Besigye and the police.
The onus also falls on Dr. Besigye, because as a national leader, he is diminishing his value here by inserting his personal tribulations in the mix of a national event. His claims that he was rigged out in last February elections have not made their ways through the court system.
Now, we learn here that he was airlifted to some remote prison, several hundred miles away from his family and his lawyers. Of course this is a government overreaction, but Museveni should be excused on this one, because the government can't be expected to pause the coronation ceremony tomorrow in order to give police time to coral Besigye back to his house.
