A Christian university in Uganda has banned political party activities in its campus, emphasizing the institution's non-partisan status.

During the oath-taking of new student council members over the weekend, Bishop Stuart University (BSU) vice chancellor Professor Mauda Kamatenesi said politics is against the values of the Ugandan school. As a non-partisan entity, the university welcomes people from various groups, the International Online relays.

"I stand to remind you again of the mission, vision and values of this university that include being non-partisan," said Prof. Kamatenesi. "You are all requested not to bring political party politics to this university as any such groups would violate what we stand for," the professor continued.

The professor shared that the Ugandan university has been able to clinch development partnerships with different organizations because of its non-political stance. Although she is affiliated with a political party, her link with that group will have no bearing on BSU.

Some students protested the ban, saying it infringes on their rights. They also called on BSU to revise it.

In response to the students' reaction, Kamatenesi explained that the school's non-partisan stance does not infringe on students' rights. She added that students can freely exercise and express their political beliefs outside of the BSU campus.

Meanwhile, outgoing guild president Bernabas Nsengiuva said the student leaders agree with the ban on political party activities at the campus. He said the move would help prevent tensions stemming from rivalry, All Africa reports.

Nsengiuva said most of the strikes conducted in universities are organized by political parties, and that could be the reason why there have been no strikes in BSU ever since. Although he said party politics are good, he also cautioned that it can also lead to violent incidents.

BSU is a private university in Uganda which upholds the Christian understanding of God, man, and the world. The establishment aims to produce graduates who fear God and practice Christian values.
