Uganda: NRM's Cec Should Give Lessons to the U.S's Republican Party

By Oskar Semweya-Musoke

Last week, it finally happened; Donald Trump is the USA's Republican Party's (GOP) presidential candidate.

And it is possible that he could become president come November! This thought worries the entire world but it has possibly sent chills within the GOP itself. There are many blogs out there asking 'how did we let this happen?'

Incredibly, the GOP primaries started out with a record 14 contestants! One by one, they fell to Trump as the campaign heated up and it is the good ones that seemed to go first. By the time the party woke up, it was too late. There was an effort to rally for the last 'good guy', Marco Rubio, but it was too late. He was also crushed!

The GOP was eventually left with two 'bad guys' and they chose the one deemed 'less bad', Ted Cruz. This is a senator who once shut down government; so, it was not an easy choice for the GOP.

Now let us briefly consider Donald Trump's campaign CV! Sometimes he comes across like a school playground bully; one who crudely insults others when feeling threatened or if one simply does not like them. His response to the female Fox TV presenter that taxed him with hard questions at a presidential candidates' televised debate was that she must have been in her menstrual periods. He has called other women fat pigs!

It does not stop there. Trump belittles opponents all the time using vulgar and un-presidential language. Last week, he said his opponent's father might have been involved in the assassination of John F Kennedy, a heroic American president.

He has also said that Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party's frontrunner, is doing well in her primaries only because she is a woman. Worse still, Trump seems to encourage violence because he seems to have accepted the endorsement of a Ku Klux Klan member and sometimes expresses such feelings "like punching someone in the face"!

It is possible that he does appeal to some people because he is able to say crazy things that many would not. For example, he has accused Mexicans of bringing crime and drugs to the USA and claimed they are rapists. He insists that he will build a long wall along the American-Mexican border to keep Mexicans out and he will use Mexican funding to accomplish this.

China is not spared either; he says Chinese are raping America because of their trade practices. His xenophobic comments about and against Muslims are probably the worst.

Sometimes Donald Trump comes across as hypocritical. He was once a signed-up Democrat and has taken liberal positions even on abortion in the past. When he is bashing China for taking away American jobs, he does not say that he once had businesses there to avoid high operation costs.

However, Trump must be an astute businessman and it is no wonder that he has crushed his opponents in a manner that some liken to a hostile takeover of a business!

But America must worry. This presidential candidate boasted that he is well endowed downstairs after some opponents teased him about having small hands. It seems that his biggest message is that he will make America great and beautiful. Is this enough to satisfy American citizens; are they as gullible as we are here?

Coincidentally, Donald Trump bullied all his opponents out of the Republican Party primaries on the very day that NRM's Central Executive Committee (CEC) was meeting to interview candidates vying for the speaker of parliament positions. There were two contestants for speaker, the incumbent Rebecca Kadaga against her deputy Jacob Oulanyah, and six others for the deputy speaker position.
