Police in Nakaseke District on Tuesday embarked on an investigation process in a case where the corpse of a 100 year old woman went missing from the grave just hours after burial in Nakaseke District.
Mr Dickson Turyatemba the Officer in Charge Nakaseke Police Station on Tuesday confirmed to the Daily Monitor that police had recorded a case of criminal trespass at a burial site and disturbing peace of the dead after unknown people on Tuesday morning vandalized and took away remains of the dead buried on Monday evening at Mifunya village without authorization from both family members and authority.
"We visited the scene and discovered that the coffin was empty and the grave vandalized. We have opened a case file SD 07/14/06/16 in a case involving criminal trespass at a burial site and disturbing the peace of the dead," Mr Turyatemba said in an interview on Tuesday.
Ms Zelda Nakiyimba(82), daughter claimed that the yet unknown people who took way the body of her late mother Manjeri Nalubwama early in the morning hours have an ill motive which is not known to the family members.
"We are surprised that the suspected vandals did not take away the coffin which we thought was expensive and possibly the target for the vandal act. The family is wondering where the body of our mother has been taken and the motive behind the act," Ms Nakiyimba said on Tuesday.
Mr Samuel Kato the LC1 Chairperson Mifunya village said residents are disturbed by the act.
"I was informed at 6:00pm on Tuesday by one of the relatives who went to the grave side on Tuesday morning. We suspect that the people who took away the body used a vehicle which parked at a road junction about 500 meters away from the family grave yard. It is possible that these people had a spy who was in position to relay whatever happened at the grave yard during the burial ceremony," Mr Kato said on Tuesday.
Police in Luweero and Nakaseke in 2015 recorded several cases involving grave vandals where remains of the dead were reportedly taken away. Residents suspect traditional healers and witchcraft practitioners as individuals orchestrating grave vandal acts in Luweero and Nakaseke District.
