Police in the western district of Rukungiri are holding a constable, Milton Byamugisha, for attempted murder.

Byamugisha, is attached to Kagunga police post in Rukungiri district. Justus Twinamastiko, the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department at Rukungiri police station, said Byamugisha is accused of attempting to kill his wife, Immaculate Kobusingye, a resident of Kagarama cell in Rukungiri municipality, on the night of July 24.

Byamugisha reportedly shot at his wife twice, injuring her seriously.

"These people have been together for 15 years, we are trying to find out why the suspect shot her," Twinamastiko said. Kobusingye is nursing gunshot wounds at Mbarara regional referral hospital.

Twinamastiko said the suspect opened fire when he heard someone trying to sneak into his house through the window.

"While I was asleep, I heard someone trying to open my window. I asked the person to identify him or herself in vain. I heard them banging the behind door, which prompted me to open fire," he said.

According to Twinamastiko, the suspect claimed he wasn't aware that Kobusingye who stays in a different home had decided to join the accused at his workplace, which had closed by 10:00pm. Byamugisha is in custody at Rukungiri police station.
