{UAH} UPC cannot be rebuilt on NRM Agenda
UPC cannot be rebuilt on NRM Agenda
The UPC Party, one of the oldest Party in Uganda can never be rebuilt on the NRM Agenda. At the moment UPC Party is down but not out. It is a pity that there are some sections of the UPC leadership which thinks that the fortunes of UPC Party can only change if it joins hands with its arch enemy NRM. To me that is a fallacy.
From day one NRM had set its agenda to destroy UPC Party. When NRM went to the bush it had that agenda in mind. Later on when NRM gained power, it has never relented on that mission. Several abuses were hurled at the UPC Party and its former leader Dr.Apollo Milton Obote. How come all over a sudden do you think the NRM leadership is going to change its mind and embrace UPC Party as a friend? This can only be done if President Museveni has a secret agenda and that agenda is to bury UPC Party forever.
I would like to implore the UPC members to learn from history. UPC Party had a political marriage with Kabaka Yekka, what happened? KY is now non-existent. From its inception the Democratic Party was one of the strongest Party in Uganda, and it was almost at par with UPC Party in terms of strengths. But when it connived with NRM and removed UPC from power in 1985, their political marriage did not last for long. Now the Democratic Party is almost a shadow of itself. In the United Kingdom the Liberal Democrats which had rebuilt itself under Paddy Ashdown and was already having over fifty members in Parliament was almost wiped out when it made a mistake of entering into government with the Conservative Party under Nick Clegg. The examples are many but I do not have time to quote all of them.
It was a big surprise for me in the last election when the UPC leadership was campaigning to get its candidates elected to Parliament. It was telling its members to vote for President Museveni the leader of NRM which has destroyed our Party and country. How on earth could this happen? If the leadership of UPC thinks that NRM under President Museveni is doing good work let them just leave UPC and they go to join him. But they should not try to carry the whole membership of UPC Party with them. As far as I am concern the talks between the UPC Party leadership and NRM is not going to yield anything good for the Party. It will just help the Party to sink father into oblivion.
