Failure to repay bank loans are affecting classes in eastern Uganda. Teachers in Butaleja District are abandoning classes in fear of being arrested after obtaining multiple loans from money lenders.
According to the district education officer, Mr Phillip Kalyebbi, most teachers have acquired between four to six loans borrowed from money lenders and banks and most of them have failed to repay, considering their meagre earnings.
Mr Kalyebbi, told Daily Monitor at his office that most teachers take loans to fund non-basic needs that are beyond their means. He explained that teachers get loans to take their children to expensive schools and to service soft lifestyle.
"My office has established that teachers have developed a culture of taking several loan products beyond their limit. You get a salary of Shs 400,000 and you take your child to a school of Shs700,000 and yet you have no side income," said Mr Kalyebbi.
