Mpigi — Police in Mpigi District are investigating two of their own officers on suspicion that they aided a suspect to escape from custody .
Mr Phillip Mukasa, the police spokesperson in Katonga region told Daily Monitor on Wednesday that the suspect, who is a UPDF captain attached to personnel office in Mbuya Army Barracks in Kampala, escaped from custody at Mpigi Central Police Station last Sunday evening.
Aiding escape
According to Mr Mukasa, the suspect was reportedly aided by two police officers who were on duty that night . The suspect was to appear before Mpigi Chief Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The case
It is alleged that in June, the soldier hired out a gun that was used in the robbery of prominent local artiste Geoffrey Lutaaya, his wife Irene Namatovu and other members of De New Eagles Band at Kalamba in Butambala District. The suspect was arrested together with four others to help police with investigations.
It was reported that the robbers attacked Mr Lutaaya, his wife and the group members with an AK-47 machine gun and a baton. They were robbed and were left undressed. The group was heading back to Kampala, from Kanoni Town in Gomba District where they had held a music show.
The bounty
The robbers made off with Shs1.5million and other valuables including three phones and a car, which was later recovered from a motor garage in Iganga District.
