Uganda: Woman Kills Granddaughter, Hangs Self

Butambala — Police in Butambala and Gomba Districts are investigating the death of two people from the same family on Sunday night at Mpongo "A" village in Mpenja Sub-county.

Ms Christine Nakibuule, the Officer in Charge at Bulo Police Post, said the incident happened at the border of Mpenja Sub-county in Gomba District and Bulo Sub-county in Butambala District. She identified the deceased as Bonfredah Nabagoye alias Maama Nagawa, 53 and her granddaughter Shakirah Nakalema, 7, a Primary Two pupil at Mpongo Church of Uganda Primary School.

She said Nakalema's body was "smartly" found lying in the bedroom of her grandmother while the latter's body was found hanging on the jackfruit tree adjacent to her house.

"It's true we found them dead and our preliminary investigations show that the woman first killed her granddaughter before hanging herself. We don't know how she killed the juvenile but very soon, police shall report the truth of the matter. We may find that they were killed by someone else," she said.

Mr John Ssali, a neighbour said that the incident happened amidst heavy downpour in the area but they got to know about the tragedy on Monday morning after a girl, Juliet Baganda, 9, who was living with the family, alerted the neighbours.

"The girl told us that her sibling took alcohol suspected to have been poisoned by the grandmother," Mr Ssali said.

Police took the bodies to Gombe Hospital mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.
