Michelle Obama gave the order to 'man our ship and bring her to life' Saturday in Groton, Connecticut
The submarine officially became the USS Illinois, SSN 786, and began active service during the ceremony
The first lady is considered an honorary member of the crew and will be involved in the lives of the sailors
Admiral John Richardson said 'powerful warship' will strike fear into the hearts of the nation's enemies
Navy has said attack submarines are needed to replace those built during the Cold War, which are retiring
