{UAH} Fat Boy’s recipe for success
Fat Boy's recipe for success
The Story behind Fat Boys' catering is not an easy one. 24-year-old Tumelo Molefe started his business in the street and today the enthuastic and determined young man, through his culinary skills gained from Gaborone College of Culinary Arts, is rising to reach the stars.
His journey to realising success has not been smooth sailing as he has had to make serious life changing decisions.
Molefe, popularly known as 'Fat boy' had to drop from Botho College where he was studying Information Technology and Business to follow his passion of cooking food.
'I dropped from school because I wanted to follow my passion which is cooking.'
After studying Culinary Arts at Gaborone Culinary School, Molefe, quickly worked through the ranks of street food vendor to the position of Sous Chef and today he owns and manages his growing catering company.
Together with his business partner, Dimpho Seisa, they have been able to penetrate the market and won several catering tenders as well as office deliveries.
Fat Boy's love for food and his desire to be his own boss saw him being able to create fresh, top quality, regular home-made meals that are easy to pull together.
He recalls: "I learned entrepreneurial skills at a tender age of 8 from my uncle. I grew up seeing him build his business from scratch and growing it into an established high end enterprise".
According to Fat Boy, when he started his business in the street he did not make enough on his first day as he sold only 15 plates but it did not discourage but rather encouraged him to go on.
His street food business, he says, grows daily and within three months his biggest clients, Incepta Public Relations and Strategies, assisted him to shine above the rest by publicising the business.
Fat Boy's Catering currently operates in a home kitchenette and his future plan is to create a bigger catering Service Kitchen that also provides Setswana Cuisine.
He also wishes to be Botswana's brand custodian of promoting Setswana cuisine internationally.
His future endeavors also include creating his own brand line cuisine that will be known locally and internationally.
"I want to create a brand that relates with the life of the natives and serve the best cuisines for the locals," added Fat Boy.
Even though Fat Boy Cuisine is regular food found in stores, his culinary arts skill sets him apart when it comes to bringing new taste and quality which has since allowed him to get more gigs in catering for weddings, office deliveries and hotels.
Some of the challenges that Fat Boy encounters, he says, include limited personnel which sometimes inconveniences him when he has a lot of clients on that particular day.
Fat boy acclaims his inspiration and success to his mother, his current partner and renowned Botswana international Chef Joseph Seeletso who currently resides and works in Poland.
Even though Fat Boy is content with the current status of his business he decries that lack of culinary arts schools in the country are a set back to the growth of the industry in Botswana and says government should consider establishing a big culinary School.
