Free Internet Usage Hits 2,500 People

Paul Sserunkuma, the Manager Computer Forensics Incident Management, NITA-U says the number of the free wifi users has significantly increased for the past two weeks.

The Number of the free wifi internet users in Kampala has grown from 1000 to 2,500 people since the launch of the service. Recently, government launched free wifi internet services in fifteen hotspots within Kampala Central Business District.
Some of the areas include Bugolobi Flats, Middle East, Village Mall, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Uganda Manufacturers' Association (UMA), Lugogo Cricket Oval, Kololo Airstrip and Kisementi among others.
The wifi is available from 3:00pm to 6am on weekends and 6pm to 6am on weekdays. Information from the National Information Technology Authority (NITA) shows that most users browse the wife from 8:00pm.
Paul Sserunkuma, the Manager Computer Forensics & Incident Management, NITA-U says the number of users has significantly increased for the past two weeks. He however says that the number of concurrent users is still low, saying the highest number recorded was 200 people during the KCCA carnival.
He says they expect to hit over 5000 people as more people learn about the service. Sserunkuma, however, says they have not yet monitored the trends to see if they can make changes on the wife. In order to log into the internet, one has to register and get a user name and password.
Brandon Gahitira, a resident of Kampala notes that he has tried several times to access the wifi at various spots in vain. He says it is ironic that government that has previously switched off social media is now providing free wifi.

Another user who declined to identify himself, say the wifi should be open to people in all parts of the city where people need it most.

Moses Olupot , another user of the wifi, says his major challenge was to register to access the service. According to Olupot, he majorly uses the service to browse social media and do basic search on the internet.
Olupot access the wifi around UMA showground in Lugogo. Arnold Mangeni, the Director Information Security at NITA-U, says the wifi usage is so far so good.
On Thursday, our reporter tried to log on the wifi along Bombo road in vain.
"Unable to join the network MYUG," read the notification from the network.
