{UAH} KABAKA MUTEESA II's SECOND AND FINAL EXILE
KABAKA MUTEESA II's SECOND AND FINAL EXILE
"The unbelievable happened. Barely three and a half years after Independence, the African government launched a military attack on the 600 year-Kingdom, sacking the Kabaka's Palace but failed to kill or capture him. Sir Edward Muteesa II fought heroically and eluded capture, finally exiting the country-- a fine soldier who did his training proud. He ended up in exile in England for a second and last time.
In exile, he lived in a flat donated by a good friend. Though he made it clear that he had no intention of fighting or subverting the Uganda Government, and there was no intelligence to point in that direction, the new regime maliciously denied him access to the least of his personal wealth and the King thus suffered extreme material deprivation. The British authorities denied him any support in securing his rights and he thus died miserable and lonely.
Amidst malicious protests of the Kampala government, Muteesa's army comrades of the Grenadier Guards accorded him an elaborate and honourable funeral in London. Mystery surrounded the Kabaka's death and still does to this day. Back in Uganda, the brutal regime worked hard to suppress any mourning by the grief-stricken subjects, including making the Royal burial site of Kasubi a no-go zone."
