{UAH} Today we remember a great man on his birthday - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today we remember a great man on his birthday - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What is interesting about this holiday is it seems to resonate with folks across the political spectrum. I think that has much to do with the fact that Dr. King has been reframed and packaged in a way to make people feel comfortable. We were taught that Dr. King was a uniter, a peaceful man one whose mission was to bring white people and black people together. A total whitewash of a remarkable man.
The Dr. King that inspires me was a black radical revolutionary. A man whose top priority was his people - Black people. He wanted them to be treated with dignity and respect for them to be afforded the same rights as their white counterparts. Let's remember that Dr. King was a victim of police brutality, wrote us a letter from the Birmingham Jail and was part of organizations blacklisted by the US government. Head of US intelligence at the time labeled him "the most dangerous Negro of the future in this nation from the standpoint of Communism, the Negro and national security." Let's never forget that this peaceful man was assassinated at the age of 39.
So you want to commemorate Dr. King? You want to walk in his footsteps? Let's start with getting to know who he really was. Let's emulate his radical love for his people, let's emulate his unapologetic quest for justice and equality. Let's emulate his opposition to the status quo. Dr. King was a radical of his time. A great man with flaws, but will forever be remembered as a hero for us all.
