INDIAN PLANS TO LIMIT SPENDING ON WEDDINGS:
Not so long ago, the media reported that someone in Uganda spent Ug shs. 3 billion on a wedding. It was also reported that another businessman spent about shs. 5 billion on his daughter's wedding.
Meanwhile in India, a prominent politician spent around Ug shs. 250 billion on his daughter's wedding. This angered many in India leading to this law.
India's Parliament wants to pass a law called "Marriages (Compulsory Registration and Prevention of Wasteful Expenditure) Bill, 2016" , to try and prevent over expensive weddings.
Part of what the law proposes is a tax of 10% on weddings beyond Ug shs. 25 million which money will be given to poorer brides to help them organise their weddings.
SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:
1. Many of Uganda's laws including the Marriage Act, Hindu Marriage and Divorce Act etc, were borrowed from India during the colonial time.
2. In some Indian cultures, its the woman and her family who pay the dowry to the husband's side unlike in Uganda where bride price is predominantly paid to the woman's family by the husband to be.
3. In Uganda, bride price is legal, however, upon divorce, its unlawful for one to ask for it be refunded.
What do you think of such a law? Should Uganda borrow from India in order to limit spending on weddings ?
