{UAH} Makerere University

Robert Atuhairew,

There is a very humourous debate  on Facebook introduced by Okello Lucima, inviting alumni of Makerere University pre-Kayibanda Museveni to reminisce about their experiences. It is truly humourous- but also very sad because nearly everyone agrees Makerere University, despite the constant grumbles we had at the time, was a truly great institution. There is also complete agreement, and great sadness,  by nearly everyone who attended the University in our time, that the University died almost as soon as Kayibanda came to power and is today a complete shadow of its former glory as a citidel of learning and a giant of culture.. Many contributors even say, it should not be called a university anymore, as it is now an architectural eyesore, a learning calamity for any student, and is no more than a glorified high school.

But I do get a mention now and again, mainly as the GREATEST CHAIRMAN a hall of residence has had at Makerere University pre-Museveni Kayibanda. The record I left as Chairman of Livingstone Hall can never be repeated- nearly every agrees on that.. A very compassionate but very hard leader who steadied the ship and got things done, a chairman who led from the front and took no prisoners..

Bobby,

just samples here:

Christine Lubwa Oryema Lalobo We must have been the last students to have been part of that culture...it was completely voluntary although the travels was funded through a vote of the Guild for Entertainment. We also had movies in the main hall...reel to reel stuff...the entry fee ...See more

George Okello
George Okello I was Chairman of Livingstone Hall. That's why I don't recognise some of the "cultures" Okello Lucima is bandying about here. Our standards were much higher then, and I believe even now, despite the neglect, atrophy and vandalism introduced by 30 years...See more

Victor Oling @Lucima, you are speaking Greek! Nowadays there are 5star hostels, Akamwesi, Mulago hostel view and MUBS hall of residence, and no more guild canteen. Serious Parties are held at club ROUGE, SILK, ANGENOIR...lol. Life today is better than life yesterday at Campus. Girls look out for cash, cars and SMART cellphones. What attracted box girls then?
