SNP MP Alan Brown claims Scots accent confuses parliament
Official reporters apparently have to 'translate' contributions by the member for Kilmarnock
An SNP MP claims that his accent is so thick that barely anyone in parliament understands what he's saying.
Alan Brown, MP for Kilmarnock and Loudon since 2015, says the official Hansard reporters who record everything said in parliament ask for a transcript of his every intervention. And he reckons his political opponents struggle to make out what he's on about too.
Hansard reporters generally ask to see an MPs notes when they make a speech to ensure the record is accurate. But Brown claims they ask him to explain what he's said even when he just stands up to ask a question in a debate.
He reckons it's harder to get sensible responses from ministers because they can't follow him. He said: "David Davis, he almost laughs when he sees me standing up. You can see him, by default, move his ear to the speaker." And he says even a fellow Scot is baffled. He addeed: "I think Liam Fox struggles too."
However Brown insists he's no intention of changing his diction despite some Tories suggesting he slow down. He explained: "Because people know me locally and know how I talk they would actually question what was happening if my accent changed when I came down to Westminster."
And the MP says he's no problems being understood at home, despite his wife being American. "I take the view if her family can understand my accent the people in Westminster should be able to as well."
Judge for yourself if Brown is comprehensible:
