US Reacts on Kasese Report, Demands Independent Probe

The U.S Embassy in Uganda has come out to react on the report conducted last month by the international NGO, Human Rights Watch concerning the November 2016 violence in Rwenzururu Kingdom, Kasese District.

In a statement, the US ambassador to Uganda Deborah R. Malac expressed concern over the way security organs handled the Kasese violence that left scores of civilians dead.

"The U.S. Embassy takes note of the report by the international NGO Human Rights Watch concerning the November 2016 violence in the Kasese region. We remain deeply troubled by the reported disproportionate use of force by security officials in the November 27 raid on the palace of a traditional king during which scores of civilians were killed," part of the statement reads.

Malac also expresses concern on the way security forces acted by making no efforts to remove unarmed people from the compound, which may have contributed to the death of numerous children.

The US Embassy also added its voice to many other agencies' demand for to the government to allow an independent investigation be conducted for citizens to get full and unbiased account of the events in Kasese.

"The Embassy urges the govenunent to conduct or permit a fair and independent investigation into this incident in the interest of upholding the rule of law. The Ugandan people deserve a full and factual accounting of the events in Kasese  which the government has not yet allowed."
