Mphoko Set To Seek Asylum In Zambia Or Mozambique

9

By Dorrothy Moyo| Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko is reportedly making plans to seek asylum in either Zambia or Mozambique.

The man who was the brainchild of the Blue Ocean document that humiliated his counterpart Emmerson Mnangagwa, was in Japan when the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) seized power in a bloodless coupe a week ago.

He was supposed to have returned on Friday, and other reports later claimed that he decided to fly into Botswana. Many of this closest family members have already left the country already for Botswana, where Mphoko has business interests.

A most recent report says he is still stuck in Japan and he is reported to have requested the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), which is handling his travel arrangments, that his tickets be changed so to land in either Zambia or Mozambique.

Mphoko is said to be afraid that he will be arrested if he returns home, as he is wanted on charges of obstruction of justice and corruption. Some of the charges stem from the time when Mphoko stormed a police station and ordered the release of then Zinara acting chief executive officer Engineer Moses Juma and board chairman Davison Norupiri who had been arrested on allegations of abuse of office and fraud. Mphoko argued that their arrest was not justifiable.

NewsDay quotes a source saying, "he was supposed to be back in Zimbabwe by Friday, from Tokyo, Japan. But through the OPC, he has requested that his tickets be changed so that he lands either in Zambia or Mozambique. We know he fears arrest because he is wanted for obstruction of justice and corruption."
