It seems like the rollercoaster of Zimbabwe's peaceful transition is reaching its final peak, and Robert Mugabe's stubborn resolve seems to have worn down. Reports in The Financial Gazette suggest the 93-year-old is now reportedly set to give the reigns to Emmerson Mnangagwa.

For the best part of 36 hours, Robert Mugabe has been under house arrest, penned in by the country's armed forces. He has been given time to negotiate a resignation and exit from the Presidency, but certainly isn't going down without a fight.

Emmerson Mnangagwa set for Zim presidency

It will complete a humiliating turn of events for the (soon to be 'former') despot, who sacked Mnangagwa just 10 days ago. The ex Vice President was highly regarded amongst the army however, and was their choice to lead Zimbabwe for life after Bob.

It seems like this decision only served to accelerate a coup, rather than spark it. If these reports are accurate, then Zimbabwe could be just a few hours away from ridding themselves of the authoritarian.
