{UAH} Uganda still has a high fertility and dependency rate - Report
The State of Uganda Population Report 2017 indicates that Ugandan women have a high fertility rate, with each woman producing on average five children in their lifetime. This, the report notes, translates into a high dependency syndrome that hampers socio-economic development.
Speaking during the report launch in Kampala, Director General of the National Population Council Jotham Musinguzi said that there was a need to restructure the economy for the government to harness from its population for sustainable development.
The State of Uganda Population Report 2017 was compiled under the theme, "Transforming Uganda's Economy to harness the Demographic Dividend for Sustainable Development."
The report covered the entire economy, identified the gaps and made recommendations to help fix the bottlenecks.
Quoting the report, Director General of the National Population Council Jotham Musinguzi said Uganda's fertility rate remains high at an average of five children per woman.
This is compounded by the unmet need for effective family planning methods mainly by women in rural areas.
The report also shows that most Ugandans are engaged in subsistence farming, only cultivating food to eat.
This means that they cannot sell to earn money to improve their livelihoods or if they sell, it's little and the returns meagre.
Many speakers at the report launch shared some of the disparities that stifle development.
Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa said the government is working to skill the youth.
She blamed poor performance in schools on the misuse of technology; and lifestyle.
