A wedding procession in Yemen was hit by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes, leaving at least ten women dead in the latest deadly attack in the war-torn country.

An airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition has hit a wedding procession east of Yemen's capital, killing ten women according to witnesses and health officials.

The airstrike on Sunday targeted women who were walking to a village in Maarib province.

The bride was among the women, but it is unclear yet whether she is from the wounded or dead.

In Yemen, the bride is traditionally accompanied by female friends and relatives, who escort her to the wedding ceremony, where the groom is waiting.

Officials spoke to AP on condition of anonymity, fearing retaliation and having no media authorisation.

Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in neighbouring Yemen in March 2015 to push back the rebels who control the capital Sanaa, in an attempt to restore the government of Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi to power.

But the military intervention - which has triggered widespread criticism from the international community - has left more than 10,000 people, most of which civilians are dead.

Recent reports suggest that Yemen has become the largest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War, suffering from famine, health crises, infrastructure collapse and economic ruin, in chief due to the Saudi-led naval and air blockades on all of Yemen's ports.
