{UAH} Woolwich, SE London

I have walked up and down this street more than any other street in the whole of my  life. I still cant believe I have lived here on this nondescript, unremarkable place longer than I lived in Uganda or anywhere else. It came as shock to learn that I have now lived most of my life abroad- that I have lived as a refugee, visitor, stranger  or foreigner  longer than I have lived as a free man, with a country to call my own, in my own country. Other people, mainly Rwandans,  have purloined my country,  and now call it theirs.  This is the tragedy of my life- and it has just struck me. But I am not alone. Even more famous refugees like Karl Marx lived most of their lives in the cold, rainy  and dreary weather of London. London is  home to all manner of people, even though we are constantly in denial and never admit it.

Plumstead Road, 1970 - 2011.

Difficult to get the same shot without getting run over. Beyond the wall in the top photograph is the Royal Arsenal. In the lower one beyond the central reservation on the right is another two road lanes and another for buses. Near the centre skyline in both photographs is Riverside House near Woolwich Ferry.

The tram track in the photograph was still visible until the 1980s when the roads were redeveloped.

This track was laid in August 1944 to enable cars on workman specials to go direct from Eltham to Greenwich without having to reverse. This track was well used on the night of 5/6 July 1952. This enabled the trams on the Eltham routes to go direct to the scrapyard at Penhall Road, Charlton instead of the usual depot run in the other direction.
The bus for anyone interested is RT1957.
March 1971.
