Akim Odong/ Dr Ochan Otim/ Ambassador Ikanos/ Mike Ocaya P'Ocure,
Here are two examples of African professionals trying to make a difference in Uganda, Kenya and Sirerra Leone. These are medics working in London hospitals, who have decided to pool their efforts together and to utilise the generosity within their individual hospitals to mobilise resources to help our people back home.
The Uganda Eye Project organises Eye Clinics in Uganda where eye specialists from the UK volunteer to carry out specialist eye treatments at various locations in Uganda. They also collect spectacles and refurbished used lenses for Ugandan eye patients.
The Renal/ Kidney Group brings together Kenyan and Sierra Leone medics, again for the same objective of arranging outreach health clinics for renal victims in both kenya and Sierra Leone. They solicit donations of used renal machines from UK hospitals as well as patients, which they refurbish and send back home to Africa.
These are minimalist initiatives and will never solve the problems of blindness or kidney failure in Africa- but it is a contribution they are making. They are not going to wait for government to address these issues because the waiting may be forever.
It is small steps like this that will change Africa. "From small and weak, to big and strong", Chairman Mao constantly reminded cadres of the Chinese Communist Party, exhorting them never to look too far ahead, and never to ignore the little tasks in preference to the grand ones.
