Besigye: Kayihura Learnt to Escape at Old Age

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president Dr Kizza Besigye has said detained ex-police chief Gen Kale Kayihura was arrested after he failed to escape due to lack of experience.

Campaigning for FDC's Virginia Plan Mugyenyi  in Sheema Municipality election on Monday, Besigye compared his experience in escaping from security agencies with Kayihura's.

Arrested last month and detained at Makindye Military Barracks for weeks now, Kayihura was attempting to flee out of Uganda.

But the military struck before Kayihura got past Mbarara, finally surrendering before the arresting officer who told him to choose between an embarrassing arrest or a dignified one.

Choosing the latter, Kayihura was flown to Kampala to face crimes committed during his 13-year tenure as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to Besigye, whereas he started eluding arrests and slipping away from security officers at an early age, Kayihura learnt such techniques later in life.

"In 1980, the same year we went to the bush is when I was arrested," recalled Besigye after telling voters at Kabwohe that he had left his job in Kenya to campaign for an unpopular Museveni of Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM) in the 1980 election.

"In 1980, the same year we went to the bush is when I was arrested."

He would later leave prison and return to Kenya.

"When I left prison, I escaped to Kenya," Besigye narrated.

"Escaping is learnt from childhood. You can see those who learnt it at an old age. Kayihura tried it but failed and now he is in jail."
