- They called on Uhuru to ensure the CS was safe and secure to excellently deliver his mandate
- The MPs said Matiang'i was being targeted by people who disliked his firm stand against illegal deals
- They vowed to walk with him in bolstering the war against corruption

Orange Democratic Movement MPs have called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to beef the security of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i saying cartels behind contraband goods deals want to eliminate him.

The legislators who spoke at Olare Secondary School in Homa Bay county on Friday, July 28, said Matiang'is firm and resolute resolve against importation and sale of illegal toxic sugar had put him in the bad books of cartels who wanted to out him.

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi said the president needed to ensure Matiang'i's protection was enhanced so that he could continue executing his mandate without fear for the benefit of all Kenyans.
"Matiang'i has been firm and resolute in the fight against sugar cartels angering unscrupulous traders through frustrating their operations. I call on President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure the CS is protected fully. He is wanted by people within and outside government because he is a threat to their illegal businesses," said Atandi.
He assured Matiang'i that Nyanza MPs were fully behind his firm stand against sugar cartels because they had rendered sugarcane farmers dominantly occupying the region poor. ODM MPs want Uhuru to beef up Matiang'i's security, say contraband cartels are after his life

Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga observed the CS was excellently enhancing Uhuru's priority to fight corruption and needed to be kept safe because the journey involved making many enemies.
"The fight against corruption must be fought without intimidation and we will support Uhuru and Matiang'i. We will not tolerate the witch hunt which has been targeted towards Matiang'i," she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Kabondo Kasipul MP Eve Obara who vowed to walk by the CS to ensure individuals who were out to harm Kenyans through illegal businesses were arrested.

"We know you have your wife's support but we will walk with you step by step. Fight the cartels from one side as we fight them on the other hand and we will be victorious," Obara said.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi pointed out Matiang'i had committed himself as an excellent member of the executive and vowed to support the reforms he was spearheading in the security docket.

The CS on his side stated he would not sympathise with individuals engaging in illegal activities irrespective of intimidation from different quarters within and outside government.
"The sugar belt stretches from Trans Mara to Trans Nzoia and harbours a huge portion of our country's population. We must secure these livelihoods and their economic power by all means by cracking down on sugar cartels. There is no sweet talk about that," Matiang'i s
