Here is why sex addiction is now a mental illness

Do you like sex too much? You might be mentally ill – according to WHO

Addiction to sex is a new form of mental illness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a statement, the organization said people addicted to sex needs to seek for medical advice, service and
intervention.

According to WHO's clarification, sex addiction is a condition that is characterised by a persistent pattern of failure to control ones intense, repetitive urges resulting in repetitive sexual behaviour.

At the early stage, the condition tends to be hidden among individuals affected, which is why sex addicts secretly suffer from the addiction.

The most presenting symptoms of compulsive sexual behaviour according to WHO include making sex central focus of a person's life at the expense of other crucial issues such as health, interests and responsibilities.

Dr. Valerie Booth, Royal College of Psychiatrists, explained that "adding compulsive sexual disorder in the classification of treatable conditions indeed paves way for patients to come forward and seek professional help.

Valerie added that sex addiction can be treated alongside or together with other conditions including depression and anxiety.
