Man Utd transfer news: 'Contact made' over deal for Croatian World Cup midfield star

MANCHESTER UNITED have officially approached Eintracht Frankfurt over the possibility of signing winger Ante Rebic.

Rebic capitalised on Argentina goalkeeper Willy Caballero's miscued clearance to volley home in a 3-0 group stage win.

The 24-year-old starred alongside Real Madrid's Luka Modric and Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic as Croatia finished runners-up.

United have been on the lookout for a winger since boss Jose Mourinho's relationship with Anthony Martial broke down last season.

And according to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt to begin negotiations over Rebic.

After he spent a year at the Bundesliga club on loan, Frankfurt exercised their option to purchase the versatile star for just £1.8m last summer.

Following his outstanding World Cup under coach Zlatko Dalic, the German side placed an estimated £40m on his transfer purchase.

United have previously been linked with Rebic's international team-mate Ivan Perisic, but a deal now looks unlikely.

"I don't know why he didn't come to Manchester when I wanted him," Jose Mourinho said regarding the Inter Milan star during the World Cup.

Last summer, United appeared to be close to agreeing a deal for Perisic who was reportedly intent on moving to Old Trafford.

Financial Fair Play meant Inter were prepared to sell the player if United met their valuation of around £49m.

United reportedly only offered £45m and the deal never materialised.
