Reports Of Impending Coup: Security Minister Gen Tumwine Speaks Out

Security minister Gen Elly Tumwine has spoken out on reports that there was an impending coup, with schemers already setting a date on which to topple three-decade president Yoweri Museveni.

The reports were revealed by Gulu Municipality MP Lyandro Komakech.

MP Komakech rose to raise a matter of national importance in Parliament on Wednesday.

He told MPs that locals had received threatening messages that there would be a coup on July 16-17.

"The messages being circulated are calling on the citizens to stay in door within the said days, pack enough food waiting for an impending attack on the region," said Komakech.

Aruu County MP, Odonga Otto added that "the messages further note that Uganda will be attacked on all fronts with marine, air force and land so as to over throw the government by July 17".

On Thursday, Gen Tumwine told parliament that the "messages", most of them published on social media, were "alarmist" and "criminal".

"Ugandans are free and safe and the security of the country is in the hands of the agencies," Tumwine assured Ugandans.
