Statewatch is seeking two volunteers for our London office

Statewatch is looking for two volunteers for our London office: one to assist with our Library of books and "grey material" on UK political and activist history; and one to assist with ongoing work on EU justice and home affairs policies and practice.

We expect volunteers to have a high level of interest in the issues that we cover and some evidence that they have already done some work or been engaged in activities – even at a college or community-based level – on the issues we cover in our work, such as state surveillance, police powers, biometrics and databases, migration and border controls, and racism and fascism.

Volunteers will be asked to commit themselves for a minimum of 4 months, for one day each week (11:00-17:00). Our preferred days are either a Wednesday or Thursday (for the Library).

Volunteers will be paid their costs for travel (this applies only to London) and lunch. Our office is located on Fleet Street.

What we ask of volunteers

A programme of work will be agreed between you and us. It could include:

·        undertaking a specific project related to our ongoing work – topic to be discussed
·        updating and reorganising online resources such as an observatory or our library site
·        adding entries to the Justice and Home Affairs Archive
·        researching, writing and/or translating articles for News Online

What you can expect from us

·        A friendly environment in which to develop your skills and knowledge
·        Ongoing assistance and support in your role
·        Coverage of reasonable travel (within London) and lunch costs

The application process

If you are interested in volunteering:

1) Send us a short statement (no more than 300 words) on why you are interested in volunteering with us;

2) Please indicate whether you are interested in the EU Justice and Home Affairs position or the Library one;

3) Attach a CV

4) Attach a sample of your written work.

And send to volunteer@statewatch.org before 17:00 on 14 September 2018.

Those selected for interview will hear from us soon after this date.
