Greetings Diaspora Community members,

I thank you for the great work, resilience and initiatives that improve the lives and plight of many Ugandans as they strive to assimilate, adapt and integrate in the social and economic fabric of a new environment. The essence of the diaspora community is to hold each others hand through difficulties and fill the void of social roles and family support networks disrupted during the process of immigration and relocation to new communities.

We have faced one too many tragedies in the community as a result of our members not receiving the assistance and resources needed to cope with the stress, anxiety and fear of an often uncertain future. This has led to some of our own doing harm, taking their lives and others succumbing to the long term effects of mental health illness.

The mission of this entity is to recognize and find support for members facing challenges such as depression, stress, anxiety among other preventable health problems. The goal is to ultimately prevent and identify resources and peer support groups that will offer members the interventions that could make a difference or even save a life.

We shall organize community workshops, outreach projects, counseling sessions, offer training resources, community conference calls and engage directly with community members who are facing some of the mentioned health and social challenges.

I invite those interested in volunteering to make a difference in the lives of people that need the support and sanctuary in your respective communities. A lot of work needs to be done to combat the social stigma, discrimination and barriers that prevent access to supportive resources.

Healthcare professionals, counselors, faith based leaders and those with access to resources and expertise in the field of mental health are encouraged and welcome to be part of this initiative.

If you are interested in being part of the Ugandan Diaspora Health Network, please email kawuma@unaapresident.org or contact via (651)2786724. Your participation will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daniel Kawuma
