{UAH} MUNTUNYERA'S BIGGEST ERROR WAS TO LEAVE HIS FATHER'S PARTY AND SHED THE BLOOD OF ITS MEMBERS, HE IS NOW REGARDED AS A CRIMINAL- OKELLO LUCIMA

Gen Muntu and the Exodus from FDC

Gen Muntu, the lost UPC Prince, has consciously made another mistake.

The first mistake was to abandon his native, ideological home in UPC, and follow M7 into the bush.

Now, he has made a second mistake: abandoning FDC, and instead of correcting his earlier missteps that took him to the reactionary M7, to wander in the political wilderness, in search of a new political party, the promised land, yet to be located on the four points of the compass.

Gen Muntu's exit from FDC, to found a yet to be named party, is bad for institution building, and democratic governance. Nationally and within parties, we must allow a thousand views to bloom and contend; and once an issue is resolved through robust and Democratic debate, we are dutybound to live with that outcome. After all, Politics, national or intraparty, is a competition of ideas and rival vision. And there will always be tendencies along a continuum of ideological and tactical persuasion. Those who aspire to become the dominant organizing view, must persuasively articulate their perspective to sway the majority on side. And when they fail to do so, they must suffer the ignominy of a minority, hoping to become a majority some day. But jumping ship like the group in FDC, and those UPCs in the 1960s, and UPCs and DPs in 1980s, is unhelpful to the democratic cause. And least so, the solution is not founding yet another political party, but finding men and women, who can faithfully fight and die for what the believe in.

I know Gen Muntu as a decent man. There isn't a leader in the opposition rank that UPC found more reliable, dependable, and honest as Gen Muntu. He is a man of his words, and passionate about what he believes in.

I hope that, one day he will reflect on this lost opportunity to return home, and be at peace, ideologically. He does not belong out there.....ideologically homeless.

You can yet return home, General; your philosophical native home; the Uganda Peoples Congress.

Journey mercies, and may you find your way back home.
