TR: {UAH} Unlikely Armenia hosting summit of la Francophonie

Dear Gwokto L'Kitgum, we are astonished by this "The organization has been criticized for admitting some countries where French is barely spoken, and according to census figures, only a tiny fraction of the Armenian population is fluent in the language."
How does this Canadia press explain that a country which banned French education and structure and destroyed most of all French speakers is the one proposed to give the general secretary of that IOF la Francophonie

Unlikely Armenia hosting summit of la Francophonie

MONTREAL — Armenia isn't top of mind when you think of thriving French culture.

Yet the eastern European nation this week will host the world's francophone elite as the biennial Francophonie Summit takes place in the capital of Yerevan. Armenia became a full member of the International Organization of La Francophonie in 2012.

The organization has been criticized for admitting some countries where French is barely spoken, and according to census figures, only a tiny fraction of the Armenian population is fluent in the language.

But a consular official at the Armenian embassy in Ottawa says the French language is alive and well in his country.

Ara Mkrtchian says French is frequently taught in Armenian public schools and a large Armenian diaspora lives in France.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec premier-designate Francois Legault leave for Yerevan late Tuesday.
