{UAH} An explanation from a NRM engineer about the new Nile Bridge

' Bridges, as other infrastructure, have a design life. The old bridge is dangerously close to the end of it's design life. It cannot be repaired forever. A firm contracted to monitor it's settlement and deformation over the years advised that a new one is built and the old one may be decommissioned in the next decade or so. The bridge is the major gate way for imports into Uganda and exports. It's a key piece of infrastructure. The pressure of cargo and passenger traffic on the old one was beyond what was anticipated at it's inception. A new one with a projected design life of 100 years and dual carriageway on both sides was a welcome intervention. It is also linked to the new KJE and the SGR. This infrastructure needs to be put in place to attract the investments we need to increase production and exports. The old bridge was designed to last 50 years. You have enjoyed an extra 15 plus years due to routine repairs by way of grouting and stapling. The old bridge was a disaster in waiting but thanks to the Kiira dam (efficiency issues aside) diversion that reduced pressure on the old bridge. The new new bridge is designed to last 120 years and I hope you will be around to testify '
