E'BIGALA BYE MUNDU:GUN BUTTS
Society evolves. But not the Ugandan one!
Hitting people with gun butts and a gun knife was something of the 1980s.
1.Ssekabo.
He was a neighbour.About 40 by this incident. We were playing near his home in early 1980s with his children.
Policemen in their sky blue uniforms from Kasangati came. They found him taking a nap at around 2pm.He was bare chested.
They put him in a corridor.
They cocked their guns and aimed at him.We came closer to gaze!Young ones!He started sweating profusely in that afternoon sun as far as I remember. He was then hit with gun butts into submission. Then he was taken to Kasangati police station.I don't remember how he was released. But I think of it now how he was humiliated before his children! We ran home to tell Mummy that Ssekabo was a thief that is why he had been arrested(to young ones then, any arrest meant theft!).
2.David
He was a soldier in Obote's government army.I don't know what he really did.But that he was arrested in a barracks and hit with gun butts and hammers. His joints were all broken.
I escorted Mummy to Butenga-Kiira,Namugongo to bury him in the early 1980s.
3.Daddy had decided that he needed one of his kids to be a Shiekh(muslim cleric). He had decided it was me.
Mummy took me to Kasangati Quran School to get admitted around September 1981.I was admitted in P.1.I would start in January 1982.
On our way back,we passed a roadblock opposite the Community hall at Kasangati,a few metres away from the school. The policeman was hitting a bicycle charcoal monger with a gun butt while instructing him to empty his two sacks so he could search for the guns.I stood gazing while Mummy walked past.Iam sure she feared looking at the incident as these were early years of M6+1's liberation war and they could easily suspect anyone. After about 20 metres, she looked back and I was still gazing. She called me.In the night I heard her reporting to Daddy;"Junior tajja kussomera ku Muzikiti.Emmotooka zijja mutomeera.Alolobala nnyo"(Junior can't handle traffic. He is young).
In October,I did an interview at Wampeewo Church of Uganda Primary school. This world missed a shiekh!
4.Daddy Abdallah.
He was my uncle living with my family then as he looked for work.Well in his late 20s or early 30s.I don't know what he did but was arrested and taken to Naggalama.I heard my parents discuss his issue but was too young to understand.
After a few days,he came back home.He removed his shirt! My,my!His whole back had cuts.He had been gun butted and poked with a gun knife.
5.Roadblocks.
There were several roadblocks between 1981 and early 1986.You had to disembark from buses or vehicles, line up and be searched. If you looked 'bad' to an officer, you would be isolated and be gun butted. The rest would be left to go.If you were lucky to return home, you would be prophessing a living God.But Namaanve forest was always your preferred destination,if you still had what your relatives could use to identify your body like the skin, clothes or distinct bodily features.
Imagine the violence we grew up seeing as children!Iam surprised we are not even violent.
VIRAL VIDEO.
Yesterday,a video went viral.A man was arrested in public.Gun butted.Thrown into a commuter taxi by plain clothed gun-welding men."Totumanyiira.Linya emmotooka"!
Are we not more civilized to handle criminals better!?
I want to be a Shiekh.Sorry Daddy Abdallah.RIP David.Ssekabo was a responsible father not a thief.Gun butts!Ahaaaaa!
1981 and 2018.No societal evolution.
