Why more Filipino kids should pursue football as a sport

Playing footy entails plenty of benefits.

"Pinoys are better suited for football" is a common observation that is trotted out whenever our national teams achieve something monumental in football. Whether you buy into that line of thinking or not, football is a great sport to get your kids into for several reasons.

It promotes a team-first mentality
Football will quickly teach a child that it takes a team to win games. It's not possible to defend, get the ball through midfield, and score points all by yourself; you will need your teammates to aid you every step of the way. The emphasis on team play is something you'll want a child to carry into the real world.

It's excellent for fitness
The sheer amount of running involved in football makes it an excellent sport to get into for fitness reasons. And if you start young, you'll get to build a great stamina base for the future. There's nowhere to hide out on the pitch—you can't not run with your team!

Size doesn't matter
In football, it doesn't matter how big or small or tall you are—everyone is on equal footing. Tall players may win more aerial battles, but short players have a better center-of-gravity for dribbling. Heavy players are tough to muscle off the ball, but lightweight players have the edge in a footrace. The many play styles and positions in football mean any kid can play to their body's strengths.

Football culture is growing healthily
The youth are in good hands, now that we have more football camps and events than ever. For starters, MILO conducted the 2nd leg of the MILO FCB Road to Barcelona Camp Philippines last September 8 and 9 at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

Nobody says you can't play both!
In the Philippines, the natural first option will always be basketball. But don't let that stop your kid from pursuing more than one sport. They have a lot of summers and after-school days to experiment, so you can give them the option to play with their feet, too.
