{UAH} Cuba Celebrates 60 Years Since Key Revolutionary Victory

Why did Bob Wine choose the Che Guevara personae  as his motif? Che is not the right comparator for him. The two could not be so different.
Consider the following:
1. Che had no country and was not attached to any tribal or national sentiments. Although born in Argentina to Argentinian parents, he considered himself a citizen of the world.
2. Che was a Communist and committed all his life to communism. He even had no time for family or personal life.
3. Che was an urbane, articulate and highly educated man, with degrees in Medicine as well as Philosophy.
4. Che was a soldier above all else- and spent all his adult life fighting for the communist cause in different countries in South American Continent and in Africa. The story is told of when Che  joined up with Fidel Castro to invade Cuba and launch the atttack on the Moncada Garrison. Che had joined up with the Cuban revolutionaries as a doctor or medic. They were ambushed and several of his comrades were killed or captured. Cornered together with Castro, Che had a choice of whether to try to escape with his medical tool kit or with his rifle- under fire, he couldn't carry both. Che decided to throw away the medical tool kit and take the gun instead.. The soldier in him took over and he never got seperated from his rifle again till death. Che eventually became the overall military commander of the Communist forces, and together with Castro, announced the overthrow of the Batista regime and the establishment of a new social order in Cuba.
5. Che's main enemy was Capitalism- he never aspired to be a President or a leader in any way, shape or form. He devoted his entire life to the total destruction of Capitalism and the establishment of a world wide communist state that would tear down borders and install  the dictatorship of the proletariat.
6. Che is a universal icon- but of ARMED STRUGGLE- NOT PEOPLE POWER. The people associated with People Power are Corazon Aquino in the Phiippinnes- and they never wore Che Guevarra beret.

On Dec. 29, 1958, forces led by Ernesto "Che" Guevera defeated Batista's army in the battle of Santa Clara.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel remembered Saturday the key revolutionary victory of Santa Clara when rebel forces led by then commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara derailed an armored train carrying dictator Fulgencio Batista's troops.

Sixty years ago, on  Dec. 29, 1958, Cuban revolutionary forces dealt a decisive blow to Batista's army, paving the way for their advance to the capital city of Havana only three days later, on the first day of 1959.

"On Dec. 29, with the help of the people, the roads were full of barricades. To face the rebel's advance airstrikes targeted the city but they could not prevent the derailment, attack, and surrender of the armored train," Diaz-Canel said via Twitter.

Santa Clara, the fourth largest city in Cuba, was the only government stronghold left between the rebel July 26 movement, led by Fidel Castro, and Havana.

The government of Batista deployed a total of 3,500 soldiers to stop 350 guerrilla fighters under Guevara's command. The battle started on Dec. 28 and in the afternoon of Dec. 29 they had taken over the armored train sent from Havana.

Batista fled the country shortly after learning of his defeat.

The iconic battle of Santa Clara is referred to throughout Cuban pop culture, including a popular song composed by Carlos Puebla in 1965 when Guevara decided to leave Cuba and join national liberations struggles in Congo and Bolivia.

"Your hand, glorious and strong / shoots towards history / when all Santa Clara / awakens to see you," the song goes.

"For his brilliant leadership of the Battle of Santa Clara, #FidelCastro said Che was a 'master of the war… an artist of guerrilla warfare.' These days our beloved city celebrates that victory that inspires us. Happy 60th anniversary. #WeAreCuba," Diaz-Canel tweeted.

On Tuesday Cubans will celebrate the revolutionary victory that forced dictator Fulgencio Batista to surrender power and paved the way for socialist economic and social reforms.
