El-Zakzaky's Fateful narrates how She Lost 5 Children In Zaria Massacre

Abuja – Hajiya Jumai Karofi, a woman and member of Islamic Movement Of Nigeria (IMN) has narrated how she lost her five children during violent clashes between the IMN and Nigerian army in Zaria Kaduna State in December 2015.

She disclosed this recently in Abuja during a Shuhada Foundation Programme of the movement to honour their fallen heroes.

Karofi stated that her five children were shot dead in cold blood during the Zaria massacres, adding that the sixth one is still with the gunshots injuries and bullets in his chest till today.

She maintained that her faith with the movement remain unshakable and unperturbed and cannot be deterred by the unfortunate incident that has befallen her.

"There is no discouragement in the struggle. Historically, when you read about people who stood against tyranny even not religiously, once you take a step backward the oppressors get even stronger. So the only way is to persist, stand firm and sacrifice everything and get what you want."

She added that their job as Muslim is to practice their religion and have been thought not to be violent but to stand against any form of tyranny.

"And for that we shall live and for it we shall die; we will never take a step backward. This is a promise from us.

"Today we are commemorating and remembering our martyrs. I, as a mother, I have lost five of my children during the Zaria massacre and one of my son is carrying a bullet in his chest right now and also I have been shot several times. As you can see, when I was coming they have to hold my hands because of the extent of my pain," Karofi stated.

She narrated how the military disrupted the programme before its commencement, adding that it was an orchestrated attack against the movement.

The group had accused the Nigerian army of killing hundreds of its members on December 12 to 14, 2015. The leader of the movement, El-Zakyzaky was subsequently arrested and kept in the custody.

A Judicial Commission of Inquiry was set up by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Rufai to unravel the remote and immediate cause of the carnage with the view to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The governor listed a range of grievances against the Shia sect, including how road traffic had been disrupted during Shiite processions and the sect's disregard for Nigerian government authorities.

The group said that it does not have confidence in the commission stating that they cannot get justice.

Under international human rights law governing the use of force during policing operations such as this, the intentional use of lethal force is only permitted when strictly unavoidable, to protect life.

Principle 22 of the United Nations Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials, applicable to the Nigerian armed forces in this situation, stipulates that, "Governments and law enforcement agencies shall ensure that an effective review process is available and that independent administrative or prosecutorial authorities are in a position to exercise jurisdiction in appropriate circumstances."

Under the same principles, Nigerian authorities are bound to ensure effective investigations.

The sect has an estimated 3 million followers spread across Nigeria.
