WHY NAJIB BALALA WILL NEVER BECOME MOMBASA GOVERNOR

Najib Balala will never become Governor of Mombasa County. In 21 years of public service, the Tourism Minister has never done anything tangible to uplift the people of Mombasa and the Coast province plus their living standards.

You will never hear of an indigenous someone elevated to high office by Balala. The few people he has appointed to parastatals and task forces are mostly his tourist hotel cronies - Asians, Whites and one who is only a Somali in complexion.

Recently, Balala did a thing that really was disgusting for a man of his status. Twaha Mbarak, the newly-appointed CEO of the EACC, hails from Takaungu near Malindi, a son of the Coast, a man we should all be proud of for being one of a few from the region to have risen that high.

But see what Balala did when the EACC came calling to inquire about an issue concerning a Sh.100m tender given to an American tourist events promotion company.

Instead of simply limiting himself to answering the questions, Balala sought to divert attention by attempting to dirty  the name of the EACC CEO in his game park  salt licks where 11 rhinos died through his incompetence. Uhuru should have fired him on the spot.

Balala despicably claimed that the EACC officer interrogating him at the end of the session asked him about his 2022 aspirations. He was thus indirectly insinuating that the EACC CEO, being from the Coast, was raking up the issue of the tender because of Balala's 2022 aspirations.

I can assure that the EACC never questioned him about his 2022 aspirations. EACC has no interest in anything but corruption issues. Balala was trying to save his hide with his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

We, who have monitored Balala since he was first anointed Mayor of Mombasa in 1998 by a Kanu cartel of power brokers who wanted to use him, know better than to believe such an outright lie from Balala.

Balala is notoriously known as an opportunist with an uncanny instinct for survival.

He was in Kanu until 3 months to the 2002 elections when he realised the ship was sinking. He jumped it and managed to land on the Narc ship which took him to Parliament ending the 28-year  stint of the late Shariff Nasser.

In 2007, he engineered the so-called NAMLEF MOU with ODM that saw him retain his seat now on ODM ticket. He was also named a Minister by Raila Odinga in the Grand Coalition.

At his first and only meeting with NAMLEF leaders who had come to congratulate him on his appointment, Balala was seen  on TV nervously but quickly reading a meaningless statement and on finishing it, he hurriedly scooped up his sheaf of papers and exited at great speed from the boardroom to his office.

NAMLEF leaders, who were hoping to have a discussion on the MOU, were left gaping in disbelief at the retreating Balala.

Balala had used NAMLEF and dumped it. All throughout his political career he has been doing just that.

In March 2012, he was fired by Raila as Tourism Minister. towards the March 2013 elections, he set up his own Republican Congress party and held a press conference with Sheikh Dor to spill the beans on the contents of the NAMLEF MOU with Raila Odinga.

He thought he would win the Mombasa Senate seat by doing so but nobody cared. He trailed winner Hassan Omar 230,605 to his 65,804 with Kajembe polling 52,733.

Uhuruto rewarded him with a CS slot. Throughout the first term, he bragged that he was in Government to stay until 2032 spanning the two ten-year terms of Uhuruto.

After Uhuruto ties started heading south because of The Handshake and war on graft, Balala has chosen his survival instinct by sticking to Uhuru now until 2022 when he might bolt to Ruto should the latter survive.

This time Mombasa people are not going to be fooled by Balala. Should he even dream to contest, he will lose badly.

We cannot forget his tenure as Mvita MP: a 9am to 1pm Mondays only MP, walking out at 1pm regardless of the crowd still waiting to see him. Balala never put in afternoon sessions.

We need somebody we can see any time we have problems. Definitely not Balala. He can go and hobnob with his hotel buddies such as the one dead now who used his position of chair of a tourism parastatal to give his restaurant a five-star status. I understand it has been stripped of it after his death.
