Weeks into the protests against former Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir, the regime noticed female protesters far outnumbered the men, so it gave the order to crush them.

"Break the girls, because if you break the girls, you break the men."

Weeks into the protests that eventually toppled Sudan's dictator, the regime's top brass sent a chilling message to officers on the ground: "Break the girls, because if you break the girls, you break the men."
