{UAH} ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION

Dan Bwanika,

How much does electricity cost an average household in Uganda? I am interested because I want to know the relative cost of living there, compared with the UK.

Here, homes are now being fitted with smart metres that can tell you your electricity consumption by the minute. Take my smart metre which I have had fitted for almost six months now. It tells me exactly how much electricity I have used  . It also tells me areas of high usage, so that I can turn off  equipment I dont need. them- for eg If I have left the cooker burning etc. The smart metre makes users conscious of energy waste because you can literally see your money burning away needlessly. For eg, I never used to turn off lights in unoccupied rooms in my house. I would turn off the lights when going to sleep. But now I realise I can save more than £10 a month simply by turning lights off in all rooms and equipment in the rooms I am not using. The smart metre is particulalrly useful in the winter time when energy use is at its highest because of the need to heat up houses..

I used to spend on averagee about £30 per month on electricity, but this has dropped down to about £20 per month. This is a huge saving. And Ii is a huge  saving also for the environment, which is what matters most.
