{UAH} Robert Read very very slowly.
Barbara Among says;
Kampala elite are shouting, labeling and name calling each other on Facebook over yesterday's shooting at Quality Shopping Centre in Naalya. If you want to witness and see how the exhibit a lack of social skills, just follow the discussions. Truth be told, these are the same people who suffer from a disease I called "arrivalism" . Just watch how the behave when dropping or picking their children from school, watch their behaviour in banking halls, in restaurants, in church, in pubs and on the road. These are public places, where one is expected to be civil but this class do not care that their children are watching and these children replicate the same kind of intolerance for others, disrespect authority and circumvent formal processes/institutions. Social etiquette is almost at zero percent among this group.
Life is not about IQ only. Actually people who achieve much in life are those with acceptable social skills. Those able to exercise self control irrespective of the level of provocation.
In Kampala, it is a given that one shall encounter a poorly behaved, young rich man on daily basis; the one who will spend recklessly, demand that he be served first, who will stand in line for 5minutes and begin throwing insults at a teacher, teller or waitress . It is also a given that if you are a Kampala resident, you will encounter hungry and angry security personnel daily. However, the antidote for these characters are lacking in our homes. No one is preparing themselves or the children to deal with the reality of a broken society. The church and schools that could have ordinarily stepped in are equally falling a part. Traditional institutions do not know how to deal with their subjects either . So, where should a socially inadequate Kampala society turn to? I don't know, but the bomb is ticking and will soon consume more.
