{UAH} My first encounter with Erias Lukwago
By Robert Shaka,
My first encounter with this brother of mine was in 1999 as a second year student at Makerere about 20 years ago. He had come to visit his brother Isah, a friend of ours also a resident of Nkrumah Hall at the time. It all turned into a deep intellectual discourse on our national politics.
I had been introduced to Isah by my room mate at the time, the now reknowned environmentalist Dr.Sebadduka Jerome Lugumira and the now Masaka LC V Chairman Counsel Jude Mbabaali who was literary a resident because all his friends were holed up in the Hall of OSAGYEFO NKWAME NKRUMAH.
These were the days of Hon.Medard Seggona, Odonga Otto, NRM Deputy Secretary General Richard Todwong, Ochan Thomas Aye, Aroma Patrick , Ethan Musolini , Hon.Grace Bagaya, Hon.Asuman Basalirwa, Dr.Mukuye Lopez, Ashaba Hannington Kituruguma, Dr.Patrick Igulot , Rugaba Kashillingi under all tribes of political groups including Vision 2000, UYD, and the famous WOGGWA WENGWA under the patron of my friend and former Chairman Nkrumah Arthur Lugya.
Like most university students, our group was no exception in it's involvement in University and national politics . Marc Kyagz, Banura Solomon, Kambasu, Mayanja, Arthur Luggya, Chris Mubiru Senfuma and many others I can't remember.
I have since followed the now Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago 's public life and been humbled and honored to be his friend for his principled stand on the rule of law and social justice as a bedrock of any civilized society. He assumed the role of DP legal counsel way back after the late veteran Lawyer Joseph Balikudembe and provided much needed legal counsel to DP and the entire opposition when Mr.Museveni's political opponents were being economically and politically crippled using our perenially lame justice system.
There are many small legal milestones that DP's legal battles with the NRM government have helped codify in our legal and constitutional framework despite the many hurdles that stand in our way. There is a strong correlation between the rule of law or the lack of it and the civilization of nations. A society run on the law of the jungle is what it is; a medieval society.
The Lord Mayor has remained steadfast in imposing his signature as a defender of the rule of law and social justice for citizens of all walks of life including peasants facing the wrath of politically god-fathered land grabbers, opposition activists facing human rights violations in illegal detention, even army Generals who have fallen out of favor with Mr.Museveni and sent to jail through military courts and this is commendable in a country where everyone has been reduced to political DEAL MAKERS.
It is rare to find humble, cultured, consistent and principled leaders with a national profile in this part of the world committed to see a socially just society that upholds the dignity of every citizen under the prism of the law. It is a generational ambition that demands civic duty from a conscious citizenry.
Uganda, in my opinion has capable leaders who have been tested for their consistency. It is up to the citizens to identify and support them to lead them to the next level. Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has stood shoulder to shoulder with H.E Rtd.Col.Kizza Besigye in an unwavering manner challenging illegalities committed by the NRM regime without fear of reprisals not by throwing stones but going to court despite all the challenges in our justice system.
I admire principled men and women who stand up for the rule of law and in defense of the rights of the under privileged in our society despite all the options available to them to live in the comfort of their status.
LADIES & GENTLEMEN, I GIVE YOU MY FRIEND THE LORD MAYOR ERIAS LUKWAGO.
