{UAH} Our diversity is our strength
By Nuwagaba Muhsin Kaduyu
March 2010, when fire gutted the Kasubi Tombs, i took a taxi the following morning to school. We passed by Kasubi where me met rioters who were resisting president Museveni's visit. I asked my neighbor, "Why are they demonstrating and destroying people's property?"
All passengers turned and looked at me in disgust, one of them said, "Driver, please stop the taxi, am paying 20,000 ush (for a journey of 1500 ush) for this Munyankole to get out." The driver, who himself wasn't a Muganda, stoped and i was thrown out. I recieved all sorts of insults as they drove off.
Since that day, i count myself a survivor because something worse could have happened. I have made a commitment to promote tolerance and understanding. Maybe the timing was wrong for such a question, but i didn't deserve that treatment. No one regardless of their tribes does.
I see today, tribalism being elevated to dominate national discourse. It controls how most Ugandans think and talk and determines what they oppose or support. Seeds of hatred are sown mostly by political elites, fueled by the media and embraced by the young and the old.
We must work together to stop this dangerous situation from pulling down our national gains as Ugandans. Let us support the bulding of a national concensus about our diversity through the #NationalDialogue.
There's hope for love and unity. Our diversity is our strength. I have friends from all corners of Uganda who are contributing positively to nation-buidling as 'Ugandans'. Our diversity is our strength.
