REMEMBERING THE IMMORTAL FLO-JO. RIP.
Florence Delorez Griffith Joyner (December 21, 1959 – September 21, 1998), also known as Flo-Jo, was an American track and field athlete. She is considered the fastest woman of all time based on the fact that the world records she set in 1988 at the Seoul Olympics for both the 100 m and 200 m still stand. Flo-Jo took the world by storm, winning three gold medals. Her performance in the 100 m Finals, in which she set a world record of 10.62, was extraordinary. Sixty of the 101 men who ran the first round of the men's 100-meter event had slower times than she did.
Besides making headlines for her performance in the races, there was a ton of media attention on Griffith Joyner's apparel. During the games, she wore jewelry and long hair, which track athletes traditionally avoided because it slowed them down. Her fingernails, which were painted red, white and blue, were 6 inches long, and she had also sported a sheer, one-legged running suit during the U.S. trials in Indianapolis.
"I spend about 15 minutes putting on my makeup," she told The Boston Globe. "I spend a lot longer getting ready for a race."
Flo-Jo died suddenly of an epileptic seizure on this day in 1998. The sporting world lost one of its greatest and most colourful performers and characters. RIP.
