{UAH} Jellyfish are really interesting creatures

Jellyfish are really interesting creatures, and rather weird looking too. Colorful, dangerous, and mesmerizing, there's a lot more going on with these gelatinous creatures than meets the eye.

1. Jellyfish are some of Earth's most ancient animals that are still alive today. They have inhabited the earth's oceans for over 650 million years, making them more ancient than sharks and dinosaurs.

2. Jellyfish are 95 per cent water. Only about five percent of the body of a jellyfish is solid matter; the rest is water.

3. Jellyfish lack not only bones but heads, hearts and brains. They are made up of a smooth, bag-like body and tentacles armed with tiny, stinging cells.

4. Jellyfish use their stinging tentacles to stun or paralyse prey before gobbling it up.

5. It might not sound very appetizing, but jellyfish have no need for separate openings for eating and pooping. They have one opening that does the job of both the mouth and the anus.

6. They are among Earth's deadliest creatures. The most venomous jellyfish in the world is probably the box jellyfish, capable of killing an adult human with a single sting in just a few minutes. Each box jellyfish reportedly carries enough venom to kill more than 60 humans. To make matters worse, their stings are excruciatingly painful; it's said the pain could kill you before the venom does.

7. A specie of jellyfish have been known to constantly cheat death. At any stage in its development, Turritopsis dohrnii, also known as the "immortal jellyfish" is capable of reversing its life cycle until it reverts to a polyp, from which it starts the whole process over again. Some scientists believe by aging backward to escape death this jellyfish has unlocked the key to immortality.

8. Jellyfish come in different sizes. The largest jelly is the lion's mane jellyfish, which grows up to 6 meters in diameter and has stinging tentacles up to 50 meters long. The smallest species is the Common Kingslayer. It's smaller than a fingernail and it's also one of the
most venomous creatures on earth.

9. You won't find them on many restaurant menus, but jellyfish are edible and are eaten as a delicacy in some places, such as in Japan and Korea. In fact, in Japan jellyfish have been transformed into candy.

10. Jellyfish can clone themselves. If a jellyfish is cut in two, the pieces of the jellyfish can regenerate and create two new organisms. Similarly, if a jellyfish is injured, it may clone itself and potentially produce hundreds of offspring.
