{UAH} UGANDA HISTORY CAN TEACH US A LESSON TODAY
Friends
The year was 1975 when a British author Denis Hills a teacher in Makerere University decided to write a book The White Pumpkin. The book was an anti-Amin propaganda which referred to the president of Uganda as a black Nero and a village tyrant. In April Hills was arrested and charged with espionage and sedition, he was tried in a military tribunal chaired by Lieutenant Colonel Juma Ali Oka Rokoni or Juma Butabika as his nick name was, and a commander of the Chui regiment that was held in the Malire Mechanized Specialist Reconnaissance Regiment. Lt Col Juma Ali was the Chairman of the Ugandan Military Tribunal. Denis Hills was found guilty and sentenced to death by a firing squad in 10 days.
As soon as that sentence was announced the British government came in and pleaded with the Amin’s government to release Denis Hills. President Amin told the British government that he needed the British foreign secretary, James Callaghan to personally fly to Uganda and plead for the man’s life. The British government refused to send the secretary and wasted time pleading with the Uganda government through other channels. The date was set on which to blow up the brains of Denis Hills.
Among the many channels that the British government used, was a soldier called Lt-Gen Sir Chandos Blair KCVO OBE MC & Bar. Chandos had served in many positions including being promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1959 and posted to Uganda as commander of the 4th Battalion, King's African Rifles. Among his soldiers was Iddi Amin who he promoted to a rank of a Lieutenant. Lt-General Blair brought a personal letter from Her Majesty to the president of Uganda pleading for the life of Denis Hills.
On arriving at State House, Blair came when Uganda had just achieved a new drink called Uganda Waragi, as he was waiting for the president, he was presented with the new drink and a glass, he scooped the bottle, and another was delivered, and another and another. By the time the president showed up to see him, with the Uganda Television cameras on, the Lt General was so drunk to even stand up. As this meeting was held on a live television, the president got up set on a live television as well, and he complained about the disrespect the British government had, for deciding to send a drunkard man to see him. The president walked out of the meeting, and continued with threat of killing Dennis Hills.
At the end of the day The British Foreign Minister James Callaghan flew in, pleaded for the man’s life and Denis Hills was released under the mercies of the president of Uganda.
The reason I have decided to write about this long ago history, is the fact that the situation that happened at that time, pushed the British government to outsource the issue of Denis Hills. It did not mean that the British foreign office negated its obligation, and it did not mean that Lt-Gen Sir Chandos Blair was anti foreign office. The Labor Prime Minister Harold Wilson made a decision to bypass the foreign office, and outsource the issue of Denis Hills, for that was the most effective way to address the issue at the given time. That is why the president can use any of the 350 million Americans to accomplish any goal he has. Get off the back of Rudolph William Louis Giuliani.
Because of the way Lt-Gen Sir Chandos Blair was slobbering on a live Uganda television, Uganda Waragi got a nick name to today of Blair, thus the term “Bampe ka Blair kange”
Profitez bien de la journée !!!
