{UAH} WHAT DO I DO IF A CROCODILE ENTERS MY HUT?

WHAT DO I DO IF A CROCODILE ENTERS MY HUT?

Okello chose to stay near a river because he could not afford tap water but wanted a regular fresh supply. Of course, even the free fish was a good reason to be near the river. This was all well and good until a crocodile felt cold and entered his bed.

On returning home from fishing, he found it and just before it attacked him, he luckily managed to kill it with his spear and panga. However, some strange policemen came and took him to the police for killing the 'killer' crocodile. Okello is wondering if they prefer that the thing had eaten him instead.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAYS ABOUT KILLING WILD ANIMALS?

More often than not, you may kill a wild animal by mistake. For instance, if you run over a poisonous snake with your car and had no idea that you did, this would be killing by mistake. As such, the Uganda Wildlife laws say that where a person kills a wild animal by accident or mistake, he or she should, as soon as may be possible, report the facts to a Uganda Wildlife Authority officer and shall where possible hand over the carcass or part of the carcass to the officer.
Therefore, if you accidentally run over a snake, you are supposed to go and report the matter to a wildlife officer.

However, that is not what happened to Okello. In his case, Okello deliberately speared and cut up the crocodile. In such a scenario, the law says that when a person kills or attempts to kill a wild animal in self-defense or to defend someone else, then that person must prove that the act was done in self-defense or in the defense of another person. This means that Okello needs to show that he only killed the crocodile because it was attacking him and wanted to kill him.
