The Long History Of How Democrats Have Divided The Country — And How They Still Do

Written by Bill Thomas

The election was a fierce struggle. The Democrats were divided over which candidate to support, but they were united in their hatred for the Republican candidate. The Republican in the race was routinely impugned. He was ridiculed for not being smart, and his appearance was regularly maligned. Even some members of his own party heaped abuse on him and thought he was a terrible choice to become president. The Republican captured less than 40% of the popular vote. but did win the electoral college.

When that happened, all hell broke loose. Because of this election, the Democrats were outraged. Their way of life was under siege and they wanted no part of it. Talk of secession emanated from state houses across regions dominated by Democrats.

Reading the preceding paragraph, you might think I’m summarizing the election of 2016. I’m not. The election I’m describing is the election of 1860 in which Abraham Lincoln defeated Stephen Douglas, John Breckenridge, and John Bell to become the 16th president of the United States. The Democrats’ response to that election was what it always has been. They fumed, attacked and, literally, divided the country.

South Carolina led the secession parade and even before Lincoln was inaugurated, eleven other Democrat-led states left the union. Democrats have a history of dividing this country. Whether it be over slavery, women’s suffrage or civil rights, the Democrats have been on the wrong side. While the GOP has sought to involve and engage, the Democrats have looked to divide.

In the 1860’s that meant slavery in the south. John C. Calhoun, prominent Democrat in his day, referred to slavery as a “positive good.” It was under Republican Abraham Lincoln that the 13th Amendment was passed which outlawed slavery.

Later, Democrats wanted to keep women out of the political arena, dividing us by gender. The right of women to vote took place on June 4, 1919. It passed the Senate 56-25. Eighty-two percent of Republicans voted in favor of the amendment while 41 percent of Democrats opposed the idea of women voting. Even the liberal Washington Post in a September 2015 article noted that the GOP, which was “responsible for the emancipation of slaves and dominated the presidency in the late 19th century,” made the first overture to the rights of women in its 1872 party platform.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is another example. Democrats staunchly opposed the bill, favoring instead to divide the country along the lines of race. Republicans, as they have throughout history, sought opportunities for people. Forty percent of House Democrats and just above 30 percent of the Democrat Senators voted “no” on this historic legislation. Republicans, however, voted differently. About eighty percent of Republicans in both the House and the Senate voted “yes.”

I know that this is not common knowledge today, but it’s all true. Some would argue that the parties have changed in the last several years. To that, I’d say a wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf.

Democrats still want to divide. They claim that the Trump tax cut doesn’t benefit regular people. Minority Leader Pelosi called the bonuses paid to regular folks “crumbs” and sought to ratchet up one of the Democrats favorite dividers: wealthy against the rest. Truth is, the tax cut has benefited ALL Americans. More than four million people are receiving bonuses, benefit increases, and higher wages. A $1000 bonus might be crumbs to the elitist Pelosi and her kind, but to us, it’s the sign of a good economy.

Today’s Democrats also want to divide along the lines of race. Their insidious attack on law enforcement underscores this. Their continued support of groups such as Black Lives Matter and Antifa and their drive to eradicate ICE are attempts to tear our country along racial lines. Crime ought to be called crime, regardless of the perpetrator’s race. Law enforcement used to be a nonpartisan issue. It isn’t in today’s world.

Democrats have found another way to stoke division and hatred. Remaining faithful to their historic roots, they relish dividing. A new way to cause division that Democrats (and the Deep State) have discovered since the election of 2016 is to attack the president and try to destroy him and his administration. That relentless assault started on November 9, 2016 and rages still today.

The Fake News media is a co-conspirator in this plot. In May of this year, a survey was taken revealing that 90% of the news coverage of President Trump was negative. The Mueller investigation seems to be a sham based on a fake dossier. FBI agents and others in the Deep State have been fired or reassigned because of inappropriate conduct and expressed hatred of President Trump and his voters.

The Democrats do not talk of uniting this country. They won’t in the midterm elections either. Why? They never do. Unity is not now, nor ever, their goal. They want to destroy our duly elected president and bring all of us regular and, in their minds “stupid”, people back in line. That’s why this midterm election is so important.

The Democrats are raging as they were in 1860. We cannot let them win. We must match and exceed them in enthusiasm and votes. Jesus said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” We are the United States of America.
